Hi Mark,
I think this is a great list that demonstrates the downward spiral from healthy optimism to devestating depression. Awareness of our emotions is, I believe, the first step to developing healthier ones. I'm convinced that the information you share with others can make a positive difference in their lives. Keep up the good work! M.E.

Hi, Mark. I was recently introduced to the idea of replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Seems like a simple idea, but after years of counseling, therapy and attending 12-step groups, I had never heard HOW to get rid of the negative thoughts. I'd heard how to get to their source, but once I got to their source, what good did that do in getting rid of them - nothing! Then a very dear friend, who is the "eternal optimist," gave the the simple idea of replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Yeah, my mind fought hard to find those positive thoughts "stupid," just like the examples you used. "Negative" had been replaced in my mind as "ignorant," and that small change of wording kept me stuck for decades. It's a daily struggle, but one that is the most worthwhile thing I can do for myself to improve the quality of my life. Thanks.

Hi Mark ! :-)
What I see first in this list of words is the fact that our language (mine is Dutch, but it's the same in Dutch) has much more words for negative feelings.
And that says it all.
I've heard of a tribe somewhere in the Amazonian jungle that didn't have a word for War .. as a result of this, they didn't make war.
I for one, am a firm believer in the power of language and sounds.
I also like to use a mantra (Ohm-Mani-Padme-Hum)when I meditate .. Reciting it sends me off like an arrow, and the mantra carries me with it.
Ehm ... what I want to say about positive thoughts to everybody; Just do it ! Use them, think them, feel them ! ..
It works you see ... oh, and DO meditate, you'll help not only yourself but the world in general.
Namaste Mark,
*Ellen*

Hi Mark,
I first want to send kudo's of great love and positive energy to you for the work you do and the fact that you are here to be an effective channel for change, for those who choose to do so.
I also would like to say with the keeping of the thread, the wonderful comments Ellen posted and brought to mind a recent speaker who's identity I do not recall and is not as important as what she discussed about "positive" thought's. And the the thought's we have in our head form as words.
Even when reading your list I felt my self falling from a higher vibration to a lower vibration as I went down the list...you could almost see how those who end up in jail, institutions, or death, which is heard in 12 step meetings, get there. The list shows you a chart or a map of that journey.
For me, the message I use personally in my life to keep from decending into the lower vibrations is simply to recognize the "words" that are in my thoughts and where they fall in this decending scale, if I could use biofeedback terminology, it is almost like the alpha frequency words (The harsh angry or rushing words or thoughts)to the beta on to theta and then delta frequency...(the kind soothing words that are calming)
As Ellen mentioned, meditation is such a great tool to change these levels, just as prayer does soothe the spirit and our thoughts are soothing when we do these type of healing things.
As a wonderful example, the afore mentioned speaker I recently heard, talked a little about how meditation and praise (prayer) which is the natural state state of the Universe and changes our DNA and actually changes how electrons move and effect how they make us feel in our body. Like turning on a warm soothing light.
She spoke of an incedent where there was an automobile accident and there was a line of cars as a result of this tragedy ahead, naturally people who were in a hurry were possibly thinking "I'm going to be late for my appointment" or "can't they just hurry up and clear this traffic"...however one person who was about five cars back began to say a prayer..."God, I don't know who this person is, but I send my energy, my grace to help this person." Meanwhile the person who was in the critical accident had an out of body experience and she felt herself floating and saw this light shining up to the heavens from this one particular car and she was able to transport herself to this light and began to feel the positive energy and hear those words and thoughts and she was so blessed by this prayer that she became aware that this was not her time to go, but she did take down the license plate number and remembered it.
She remained critically ill for several months, but when she finally recovered months later she found the person's address from the license plate number and showed up on her doorstep with roses and thanked her for her prayers, and shared her magnificent experience.
So yes our thoughts are so very important and the type of words we use to think about ourselves, others, and situations really do have a critical effect on not only ourselves, but also those around us.
Thank you all for allowing me to be so wordy and share in this wonderful gathering of those who are on the path of healing and light. May you be gentle to yourself and may you be blessed
greatly.
Joel

I dont know if this makes any difference. But I mistakenly was given terrible medications of which I am trying to free myself.
Therefore I dont know if you would still recommend a journal for me.
My husband works away midweek, he has too, this alone is hard. So I am having to go through some emotions as I have to free myself of these medications.
I am halfway off my medication of an anti-depressant and tranquilisers. I have now realised that after extreme stress, I was experiencing this fallout from a previous anti-depressant that I was on for some years, 20mgs Prozac. I did not really have no side effects except tiredness. So I come off it. Then I went through a very big lifechange and challenge which was too much for me. So on my way of coming off these meds, I thought it may be good to keep a journal.
I hope it does'nt make any diference the medications. Within time I will heal. But I need to deal with negativiity in a big way.
Their is obviously a lot of perople that think your work has helped them a great deal. I would like to be one of these. Please.

Hi Mark,
I receive your newsletter and through that, found your blog and this list. It is a good list and as I "go down the list" I see it is in pretty accurate order. Don't think you missed a thing. Also noted that as I went down the list, I felt a sinking inside. Perhaps I should have read from the bottom up.
Take care,
Heather

Mark,
Hello. I receive your newsletter and it has helped me more than any antidepressants, drugs, or books ever have. Seeing this list reminds me of where I first came from and what progress I have made processing those emotions. It also shows me what I am still striving for.
Thanks,
Hilary

Thanks for sharing this list and your other heartfelt writings; reading the words of someone who has struggled with emotional healing has been much more helpful than hearing similar statements from paid professionals. You've given many people a path, a lifeline.
